Initial Release: SIRR Team Investigates Deputy Involved Shooting

Last night, at approximately 8:30 pm, a Spokane County Sheriff’s K-9 deputy conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of N. Barker Rd. and E. Cataldo Ave. There were three people in the vehicle that was stopped, a female driver, a female front seat passenger and a male back seat passenger. During the traffic stop, the deputy determined the two females had warrants for their arrest. Back-up officers (another Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy and a Liberty Lake Police officer) arrived on scene and assisted in taking the two females into custody on their warrants.

The K-9 deputy who initially conducted the traffic stop then attempted to determine the identity of the male passenger. The male provided an incorrect name and the deputy instructed the male to exit the vehicle. Upon exit from the vehicle, the male fled on foot.

The K-9 deputy and one of the back-up law enforcement officers pursued the male suspect on foot and caught him a short distance from the scene. There was a physical altercation as the deputy and back-up officer attempted to take the suspect into custody.

The suspect produced a gun and shot at the law enforcement officers. The officers were not hit. One deputy returned fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect was then taken into custody and transported to a Spokane hospital for treatment for a non-life threatening wound. He is currently listed in stable condition. Upon his release, he will be booked into the Spokane County Jail.
