Assault/Robbery Suspect is Combative and Spits on Deputies

Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies, investigating an assault call at the Flying J in West Spokane County, arrested 25-year-old Shane A. Sleep for Robbery 1st Degree, two count of Assault 3rd Degree, Custodial Assault and Assault 4th Degree.

On February 15, 2017, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded initially to an assault call but learned as the information was reported that a suspect, later identified as Sleep, assaulted the adult male victim while demanding the victim’s wallet.

Deputy Brandon Cinkovich contacted the first victim who said he was walking back to his truck after paying for fuel when he noticed Sleep walking away from him.  He said Sleep noticed him, turned, and ran at him demanding his wallet.  Sleep began punching him in the face and head multiple times as he continued to demand the victim’s wallet.

A citizen who heard the commotion came to the assistance of the victim.  He said Sleep punched him in the face while he helped the victim fight Sleep off.

Deputy Cinkovich also observed surveillance video of the attempted robbery and assault.  Sleep was observed running toward the neighboring apartment complex.

Sleep was contacted at his apartment and taken into custody.  After being advised of his rights, Sleep denied being at the truck stop and stated he didn’t do anything.  When asked what he didn’t do, Sleep could not explain.

As Deputies escorted Sleep toward the patrol cars, he became uncooperative.  He began screaming and tried to stop walking.  As Deputies continue to move him along, Sleep jumped up and kicked at them.  To maintain control, Sleep was brought to the ground and restrained.  When they stood back up, Sleep was extremely mad and began yelling he would get an attorney and the Deputies would lose their jobs.

Sleep continued to be uncooperative, kicked the patrol car door and would not stay seated upright.  When placing a seatbelt on Sleep for the transport to jail, Sleep spit, hitting both Deputy Benner and Deputy Cinkovich.

At the jail, Corrections Officers were advised of Sleeps uncooperative and assaultive behavior.  During the intake/booking process, Sleep again became aggressive injuring a Corrections Officer’s knee.

Sleep was booked into the Spokane County Jail for Robbery 1st Degree, two counts of Assault 3rd Degree, Custodial Assault and Assault 4th Degree.

The initial victims refused medical attention at the scene but the Corrections Officer did receive treatment for his injury.
